Continuing professional learning or continuing compromise? Tensions and dilemmas in supporting learning in practice - 16th Salon of Continuing Education and Lifelong Learning
Continuing education in the professions is increasingly being regulated. Specific requirements for continuing registration or membership have been introduced and strengthened. Alongside this, professionals have always engaged in their own learning to meet the demands of the challenges they face as they go about their normal practice. How well do these two processes sit beside each other? Does mandatory professional education necessarily lead to improvement? This lecture will explore some of the tensions faced by those who wish to enhance the quality of continuing professional education without burdening practitioners with inappropriate requirements. It identifies some of the contradictions that those who wish to support this enterprise need to confront.
